Right now, the French presidency of the European Council is leading negotiations with other European ministers on a new EU law that could protect precious ecosystems around the world. But the planned law is still full of crucial holes.

Fragile ecosystems, like savannahs and wetlands, are left out of the proposed law, leaving millions of animals to die every year in fires lit to clear land for production. The proposed law also leaves the rights of many Indigenous and local communities unprotected. To protect the climate, biodiversity and human rights, the EU must end its complicity in global deforestation.
